NSFM introduces the first segment of our series on Connective Communication, or C2, which we developed for kids and parents as a fun, healthy, interactive way to improve communication skills and empower individuals. We want to evolve toward a future of more loving and peaceful families, relationships, and countries. It starts with each one of us—our kids are our future!
In spite of our best intentions, much of our “loving” communication results in misunderstandings, anger,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], hurt,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], tears, sadness and frustration. C2 uses questions, tools and a new language, the language of compassion, to move us beyond reacting to what people say. Then, we begin to learn and understand their hidden needs, empowering us to let go of blame,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], guilt and anger.
Let’s take a closer look at this definition.
For our purpose, we will define communication as:
The sharing of information through interactions for the purpose of understanding one another.
There are many forms of communication, such as sounds, signs, letters, symbols, looks, whistles, words, sentences and even smells! Depending on the type of communication, there is also context, feeling, expression, and tone – all of which gives meaning to our messages. Sometimes we think we are delivering a clear message but the listener receives a different message than what we intended.
Science is discovering that negative thoughts, emotions, language and reactions create a harmful pattern of stress in our body. While short bursts of stress may boost our immune system, prolonged day-to-day stress wears us down and is a precursor to poor health. How we feel affects the ability of our body and mind to run well. In “The Biology of Belief,” Bruce Lipton gives an in-depth biological explanation of how our beliefs about the world affect our physical development and well-being. Do Our Feelings Affect Our Communication?
Yes! If we feel sad, we are more sensitive to what someone says. Studies show that the brain uses our emotions as a means of protection, helping determine what to pay attention to as it tries to make sense out of our world. Negative emotions create resistance in our body, mind and spirit and that resistance influences our reactions based how we see the world, usually on a sub-conscious level. In a wonderfully inspiring movie called “The Secret,” they explore the law of attraction, and the possibility that we get what we think and “feel” about, even the negative thoughts! (Find more on “The Secret” on our website.) Eliminating negative emotions opens up the pathways to hope, discovery,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and learning.
What’s Wrong With How We Communicate Now?
That’s exactly the point! We tend to speak in rights and wrongs, casting blame and judgment as we talk. Our basic communications and tools leave us feeling guilty, defending our position, and ultimately separating us from each other and our purpose for being in each other’s lives. There is a better way and it requires a new language and new tools for interaction to bring us together. A commitment to learning a new language and using new tools starts the process of creating new neural pathways based on trust and love. Along the way we might just discover we have a much better chance of getting our needs met.

My journey to health started shortly after another relationship ended, and at the time I was having regular panic attacks.
I had been in many relationships and they all seemed like a broken record. I was also having physical symptoms that no medical doctor could cure or explain. Basically I was hollow inside and subconsciously I was trying to fill the void with someone else's energy; not a great foundation for a solid romantic relationship. At the end of each relationship I would be very depressed and afterwards I was forced to face myself and be alone with myself, a very scary proposition at the time.
In each instance I would be humbled to start looking at the issues that were stopping me from being the person I knew I could be and wanted to be: physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. At this time of life my physical health was still taking a toll on my quality of life as well. I had very high blood pressure for no apparent reason, severe allergies and food sensitivities, panic attacks daily (where I could pass out),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], heart palpitations and arrhythmias as well as rapid beating of the heart.
I could not sleep through the night, was very angry, irritable,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and tired all the time. At this point on my journey I hated my life because I knew that I could be so much more, but was scared and frustrated that I might not be able to find my way back to healthy vibrant living.

This segment of my life went on until I had a kind of epiphany when I turned 30. At 30 (don’t ask me why 30) I started looking within to find out why I had been so hedonistic and selfish up until then and discover what really what made me tick. I had always wanted to find a way to stop taking 3 types of blood pressure medicine and try to be in optimum shape physically, but now I wanted to look at the whole parcel; mind,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], body, and spirit.
I started by joining a number of self help groups and reading spiritual books that others either gave me or suggested that I read. This was both an amazing time in my life and sometimes terrifying to face the “me” that I truly thought about myself. I got to know each of the companies and the owners and where the ingredients came from and how they were processed and formed. Especially what excipients and binders in the supplements were or were not on the label. I learned to cook very healthfully and tasty too. I started to get into a variety of Asian foods and super foods.
Up to this point I had been able to manage my life but I felt empty inside and was not really centered or grounded. I was still on three types of blood pressure medicine, many different herbs and a large assortment of neutriceuticals. My allopathic physician at the time wanted to add a hyperglycemic and lipid lowering drug to my already overly burdened regimen that was not working very well and costing me almost $500.00 a month... all this for the semblance of health.
I kept searching for something... anything that could help me be come back to my true self again, or at least feel as if I belonged somewhere and had peace in my life because I was so restless and felt like I had no purpose.

From this experience I learned that illness is not just physical but a combination of physical, mental and emotional.
We can and do create a lot of unnecessary stress in our lives from negative thoughts, emotions, words and deeds. These all play a roll in our health and well being. They block our energetic system of medians in our bodies and we become stuck in a stasis that manifests physically. If we stay like this long enough then we become toxic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and blood and oxygen do not move through our bodies efficiently. This stagnation leads to disease. Toxins from our external environment also play a huge role in the disease process. So I've learned that it is extremely important to let go of stress, and let go of the factors that inhibit progress.

Sometimes this is very hard to do or may seem impossible. It can be done! Each of us must enlighten along the path of life his or her own way, and at a unique rate.

I find that I must listen to my patients very carefully to find out which way is going to be the best path that leads each of them to health. So keep your chin up! It will get better, and remember one thing, when you are going through a serious life test, “This too shall pass.”

She knows I've been moving at top speed, not heeding her soft reminders to care for myself. She pulled the emergency brake by taking the one thing I need for my job: my voice.

Find a comfortable place to rest, and assume a comfortable position. Start with deep breathing (see my earlier posts for detailed directions), making sure to feel your ribs expanding outward and sideways. Do this for several minutes, breathing in and out through your nose, letting the air fill your lungs and even your entire torso. Now, send your breath to any area of pain or discomfort, and as you exhale, imagine the breath taking that discomfort from your body. Do this as long as you would like. When you feel relaxed and at ease, move your focus inward. Imagine you can feel the inside of your body, just underneath your skin, all over.
Stay in this state for as long as you'd like,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and simply enjoy the sensations within your body. Feel the power of your own body to heal itself, feel your cells regenerating and the healing flow of oxygen to every part of your body. If you fall asleep,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], allow it. You obviously needed it. Rest. Take the time to heal, just like you take the time to do everything else. Schedule in healing time and make it a priority. Your body is always trying to heal, even as you are living in anxiety and stress mode,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], running here and there,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], working, and berating your body for not healing. Give it a fighting chance to succeed by making time for healing.
A few days ago, I woke up with a sore throat that progressed rapidly to laryngitis, a sinus infection, and bronchitis. The only problem was I didn't have time to be sick. I had two exciting coaching workshops to present, clients to coach,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and a million other little things scheduled. I barreled onward, because, as you may have noticed from other posts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I am quite capable of feeling fine emotionally while feeling sick. I gave the workshops,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even though my voice was just above a whisper, and enjoyed every minute. I kept up with my clients, croaking my way through sessions. I did not alter my schedule one bit, other than to skip my morning run a couple days because it was adversely affecting my vocal cords.
How many of use don't have time to be sick? How many of us, dealing with one chronic issue or another, plow forward with our lives, never stopping to listen to our Inner Healer? We hate our symptoms, we resist our experience, and we try our hardest to ignore it. And then we wonder why it won't leave. We rage against it, fight it, try to escape it - we do everything but stop and turn inward.
This is the assignment I gave myself this week: Feel the Healing. When you're dealing with chronic health issues,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Feeling the Healing is a most enjoyable, relaxing, helpful experience. It's the best gift you can give yourself, and I recommend you give it to yourself daily,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or even twice daily.

See if you can feel an inner presence moving within you, circling throughout your body. This is the physical form of your Inner Healer - often it will feel like a slight tingling sensation all over your body. If it helps to imagine a warm, glowing light within you, you can do that as well. Let yourself be carried away into the focus of feeling this inner healing power. Watch it move through your body, let it go wherever it needs to go,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and just know that it is healing you, right now. If your mind throws up a blockade, such as "this is silly," or "I'm not healing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," just notice the thoughts and redirect your attention to the sensation underneath your skin. Notice what it feels like. Is it warm? Is it glowing? Is it soft, heavy, light, syrupy, smooth? Where is it traveling? You can also say to yourself, "I know healing takes time, but it is beginning right now." This helps alleviate mental doubts and fears.

So today when you see that person begging for money give them a dollar, tell them they are beautiful. When you see that wealthy person getting out of their fancy new car with a grumpy look on their face, say hello and tell them they look wonderful and watch their eyes sparkle with appreciation.
One of the most important things I have practiced in my life is Compassion. Compassion for every person I meet, from a street person begging for money to a wealthy person who lacks happiness. My philosophy is that everyone is doing the best they can with what they have.
“Feel the pain of others. Understand their strengths and disappointments their hardships and inadequacies and open your heart to them. Realize that everyone is doing the best they possibly can. Judge no one. But rather,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cradle all humanity in your heart.”
